The six candidates running for three open seats on the Hermantown Schools Board of Directors would like to introduce themselves. For additional information, the Hermantown Chamber of Commerce will host a School Board Candidate Forum on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, at 7 p.m. in the Hermantown High School Auditorium.

Tim Peterson

Greetings! By way of introduction, my wife Sandi and I are lifelong residents of the area, moving to Hermantown in 1990. Our children, Janna, Ross and Marcie graduated from the best school around, Hermantown! That tradition continues with our two elementary grandchildren. I am currently the Board’s Vice-Chair and a full-time UMD faculty member teaching Finance after a career in Management at ALLETE and RSM US LLP (National CPA / Consulting Firm). My educational background includes degrees in Accounting and an MBA from UMD.

I strongly support the district’s critical initiatives such as getting our students back to pre-COVID academic and wellbeing levels, the need to attract, support and retain our teachers and staff along with developing appropriate student curriculum options relevant to their future careers.

If elected, I will continue to focus on fair representation for Hermantown and Fredenberg residents as I have for the past four years.

Values and Character

Our children are our future. My wife of 28 years and I chose Hermantown 16 years ago for the values the school represented. I am running to be a voice for the community that strives for our students to value a strong work ethic, personal accountability, and respectful interactions. Every child has a chance to succeed and should be encouraged to meet their full potential. I believe the curriculum should be transparent and focus on reading, writing, math, and science.

My background is 30 years as an engineer. I am Director of Operations at Enbridge with a mechanical engineering degree and MBA in finance. Fiscal responsibility is key. Our budget should be focused on facilities that are fit for purpose, retention of good teachers, small classrooms and endeavors that enhance learning.

I hope to earn your vote. Please reach out with any questions. Facebook:

Matthew Brown

My name is Matt Brown; I am a proud husband, father, fisherman, and Hermantown community member (since 2011).

I am running for the Hermantown School Board in the November election as a strong advocate for parents and their children while retaining and supporting the great teachers in the district. I believe the purpose of the school board is to champion the values of the community; to accomplish this I will fight for access and transparency for parents. I see curriculum and medical policies as two of the most important areas of focus in the short-term.

I have two beautiful daughters, Mila (4, pre-k) and Jema (newborn) that are soon to enter the Hermantown School District. I see all children as true gifts from God. I am passionate about ensuring the quality of life in Hermantown holds true for our children and education system.

Go Hawks!

David Hokanson

Hello, my name is David Hokanson and I am running for Hermantown School Board. As a longtime resident of Hermantown, and with having four children in the district, I am excited to be considered for a position to serve our community. Hermantown has been fortunate to have the commitment and dedication of those currently serving on the school board, and I would like to thank them for their service.

If I am fortunate enough to represent the district, I look forward to working collaboratively with the school administration and the community to continue the tradition of an excellent education. This is not possible without the support of the parents and the community, so I also look forward to finding creative ways to encourage more visibility, input and involvement. It has been great to see the enthusiasm and excitement throughout the first several weeks of school!

Matthew Munger

My name is Matthew Munger, and I am an alum of Hermantown Community Schools. After graduating in 1998, I earned an undergraduate degree in Computer Science with a minor in History from UW-Superior and completed my master's degree at the College of Saint Scholastica in Information Technology Leadership with a focus in IT security.

I enjoy coaching youth sports and a variety of outdoor activities with my wife and three children. While coaching, I have had the opportunity to see the impact of our education system and community support firsthand. As a parent, I have learned to value these connections.

I believe in education rooted in community. As a school board member, I will engage our community, focus on the outcomes for all students, support our educators and staff, and work to ensure safety in our schools. To read more about my vision please visit
