Hermantown High School Drama Club proudly presents: The Drowsy Chaperone: A Musical Within a Comedy by Bob Martin and Don McKellar with music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison.  Nominated for thirteen Tony Awards in 2006, winning five, The Drowsy Chaperone: A Musical Within a Comedy is a hilarious homage to early American musicals, examining the effect musicals have on the fans who adore them. The Man in Chair, a mousy, agoraphobic Broadway fanatic, seeking to cure his “nonspecific sadness”, listens to a recording of a fictional 1928 musical comedy, The Drowsy Chaperone. As he listens to his record, he is transported into the musical. The characters appear in his dingy apartment, and it is transformed into the set of the show.

“Comedy isn’t easy, and the cast and crew are working hard to bring the audience every laugh possible. They are learning how to tap dance, do spit takes and do vaudeville-style physical comedy,” remarks Ken Ahlberg, the play’s director and esteemed choir teacher. He is joined by co-director and band teacher, Nick Allen. When asked why one should care about this play, Ahlberg passionately insists, “Honestly, it is the funniest play I have ever seen. Hermantown students were lucky enough to see the original Broadway cast perform this on one of the arts trips to New York City, and every single person loved the show and thought it was hysterical.  Hermantown put on this play twelve years ago in what is now the middle school lecture hall, and community people who saw this show are still talking about it. It really is entertaining and most theaters around here are afraid to do it because people don’t recognize it. Take a chance and come see it,” Ahlberg encourages. When the curtains rise on The Drowsy Chaperone, be prepared for an evening filled with laughter and spirit!
