2012 Scholarship Process
Scholarship applications can be picked up at Hermantown High School (HHS) beginning in February. Applications are due back to the HHS Guidance Office no later than Monday, April 30, 2012. The selection committee (approximately 5 to 6 HHS Alumni) will meet in May to review applications. The scholarship will be presented at the annual HHS Awards Assembly to be held in early June.

Kelly Fichtner was selected to receive the 2008 Hermantown Alumni Association $500 Scholarship.
Kelly’s father Wayne Fichtner was a 1978 graduate of Hermantown High School. Kelly participated in the sport of Volleyball, she served as Peer Mentor, she excelled in speech, was a National Honor Society member, School Improvement Team, Student Council and Link Crew member. She also represented Hermantown as a Junior Rotarian and Junior Chamber of Commerce Representative. Kelly plans to attend North Dakota State University to study Architecture.

Sara Johnson was selected to receive the 2008 Hermantown Alumni Association $500 Scholarship.
Sara’s father was a 1977 graduate of Hermantown High School. Sara is an Honor Roll Achievement winner, she won a coveted role in the school musical, Guys & Dolls and received a Drama Award. She also participated in a Mission Outreach Venture Program and has been recognized for her artistic talents. Sara plans to attend the college of St. Scholastica to major in Occupational Therapy. |

Caleb Carlson was selected as the 2007 recipient of a $500 Scholarship from the Hermantown Alumni Association.
Caleb is an accomplished young man both at school and in his community.His passion for the fine arts is evident in the many activities he has led and been involved in. Caleb was active in Hermantown Summer Theater for seven years beginning in 1st grade. He acted in all eight productions during High School, and held several leading roles. He was in two High School one act play competitions as Section Champion and State Competitor and Section runner-up. As a member of the speech team he won medals at numerous invitationals and competed at the state level three years, placing 7th his sophomore year. Caleb was active in Boy Scouts for many years reaching the rank of Life Scout. He was an altar server and volunteer in his church community.
Caleb was chosen to participate in the Scott Anderson leadership forum. He taught a drama course for elementary school students and enjoyed working with children as a Camp Miller counselor. He was a member of the School Improvement Team, the National Honor Society and was on the High School Soccer and Track teams. Caleb graduated with honors. His father Daniel and grandfather George hail from Hermantown graduating in 1976 and 1946 respectively. Caleb was one of the 22 students accepted into the University of Minnesota Guthrie Acting Program, from more than 700 who auditioned and applied. He continues his studies at the U of M.

Katlyn Brown was selected as the 2007 recipient of a $500 Scholarship from theHermantown Alumni Association.Katlyn has participated in Varsity Swimming, Student Council, the School Improvement Team and the Spanish Club for four years. Katlyn served as a member of the Prom Committee, the Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Hawk Spirit Committee. She also attended the Scott Anderson Leadership Forum. Katlyn excelled in Drama as the Student Director for the high school musical, “Guys and Dolls” – and that theatre background insured her success as part of the stage crew for the stylish production – “You Can’t Take It With You.” Katllyn was named Ambassador of the Upward Bound Math & Science Program and was honored as “Citizen of the Year.” She has volunteered her time as a Peer Mentor and for regional non-profit organizations such as Animal Allies, the Novacare Physical Therapy Rehabilitation Center and the Boys and Girls Club of
Duluth. Katlyn’s mom Jayne Lundgren was a 1982 graduate of Hermantown High School and along with her mom’s twin sister Jeyn Lundgren. |

Michael Crusan was selected to receive the 2005 Hermantown Alumni Association $500 Scholarship. Michael had many accomplishments throughout his years at Hermantown High School and was involved with varsity soccer, varsity speech, varsity track, varsity tennis and drama. Outside of school Michael was involved with church/community organizations as an altar server, choir member, lector, Camp Miller counselor and bell ringer for the Salvation Army. Aside from wining numerous individual awards at invitational tournaments, Michael, in his very first year on the speech team, was named the first alternate to state in the category of Humorous Interpretation. Michael's greatest accomplishment in high school was his 6th place finish at state speech in 10th grade. Michael's goals are to attend a four-year college to study pre-dentistry or broadcast journalism and then attend a school of specialization in his desired field or major at that time.
Michael Crusan parents, James and Barbara were both 1976 graduates of Hermantown High School.
Patrick Ide was selected to receive the 2005 Hermantown Alumni Association $500 Scholarship. Patrick is highly motivated and reliable in all of his classroom commitments. Patrick made impressive contributions to Hermantown High School's extra-curricular programs and was involved in hockey, track, soccer, Knowledge Bowl, Spanish Club, drama, and band. In 12th grade Patrick was an office cadet and a member of the National Honor Society. Outside of school Patrick volunteered at St. Luke's Hospital and for the community Halloween party and Summerfest. He also participated in Earth Day tree planting and roadside garbage clean up. Patrick is active at his church with altar guild and YAPP, plays VFW baseball and was a Junior Rotarian. Patrick plans to attend UMD for computer and electrical engineering.

Maren Bergquist was the 2004 recipient of the Hermantown Alumni Association $500 Scholarship. Maren is a very hard worker and does not back away from a project until it is completed. She has dedicated her time to projects that benefit the poor, help the youth and clean up the environment. Maren had many accomplishments throughout her years at Hermantown High School. She was named Student of the Year her Sophomore Year, was a member of the National Honor Society and attended the University of Minnesota Duluth under the Post Secondary Enrollment Options Program. Maren also stayed active by helping others. The following are some of the organizations she was involved with:School Improvement Team, Youth Mentoring, Youth Alcohol Free Alliance, and Elementary School Club Leader for Spanish, Science, and Reading. Maren also helped coordinate a Blood Drive for the Memorial Blood Center. Maren has been accepted to the College of St. Scholastica where she will study physical therapy. She choose this career so she can provide a service to her community.
Ben Johnson was the 2003 recipient of the Hermantown Alumni Association $500 Scholarship. Ben comes from a long line of Hermantown graduates. His grandparents Larry and Barb (Ruth) Huttel are graduates of the class of 1954. His mother Kathy (Huttel) Johnson graduated in 1973 and his father Richard Johnson graduated in 1970. Among his accomplishments while attending Hermantown High School was being named Student of the Year in his Junior Year, playing on the football team that won the section championship, playing in the state tourney, and raising money to fund the boys tennis team, which he was elected co-captain for. When the Hermantown Tennis Team became a victim of budget cuts, he helped motivate his teammates to fundraise, resulting in sufficient funds for the past two seasons to sponsor a team. Ben was also instrumental in the development of a skate park for the City of Hermantown. He was involved with research for this project, presenting information to the City Council, drafting rules and regulations and enforcing those rules with his peers. Ben has been accepted to the College of St. Scholastica where he will begin his studies in Pre Law.
Katrina Lofald was the 2002 recipient of the Hermantown Alumni Association $500 Scholarship. Katrina excelled in soccer, basketball, track and Honor Society. She participated in Spanish Club, the School Improvement Team, the Youth Alcohol Free Alliance, the Prom Committee, Youth Mentoring and Junior Rotarian programs respectively. Katrina unselfishly gave her time as a volunteer at St. Luke's Hospital, the Domiano Center, as a vacation Bible School teacher, the adopt a highway roadside clean-up project and the Proctor Suicide Prevention program. Both of Katrina's parent hail from Hermantown High. Kathleen Lofald graduated from H.H.S. in 1968 and Stuart Lofald in 1974. Katrina felt that Hermantown was an exceptional place to grow up and states that "it is nice that everyone knows each other and cares, and it is wonderful to know that I am part of a school system that is known for its excellent teaching staff, academic excellence and athletics." Katrina will attend the College of Scholastica where she will pursue a career in physical therapy.
Andrew David Stockinger was the 2001 and first recipient of the Hermantown Alumni Association $500 Scholarship. Andrew is the son of Brian and Susan Stockinger. Andrew comes from a long line of proud Hawks. His grandfather, Bill Martin, and grandmother, Dawn Ruse Martin, both graduated from Hermantown in 1954. His mother graduated from H.H.S. in 1977. Andrew was active in the Hermantown Student Council, the School Improvement Team, Youth Alcohol Free Alliance, Sophomore Steering Committee, and Kids Plus, just to name a few. Andrew enjoyed volunteering his time at Grace Lutheran Church, First United Methodist, Kiffmeyer State Youth Task Force, and for the Neighborhood Clean-up Program. Andrew plans to become an Elementary teacher.
Andy graduated from the University of Wisconsin Stout - December 15, 2007. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management.
